Title Opening Format Sound Studio Notes
Taras Bulba April 4 (UK) Panavision 6-Track Stereo United Artists US 35mm release in 1962. Despite contradictory claims by others, this may have been the first 70mm blow-up. (see entry for ‘The Cardinal’).
Cardinal, The Dec 12 (USA) Panavision 6-Track Stereo Columbia US reserved seat engagement. Many sources suggest this was the first 70mm blow-up release (see entry for “Taras Bulba”). Some newspaper ads noted “Photographed by Leon Shamroy in Technicolor and Panavision 70” -- with the “70” notation floating in and out of the ads depending on the day and city.
Bye Bye Birdie NA Panavision 6-Track Stereo Columbia US release: April 5.  US 70mm release unconfirmed. Title is listed in the book “Wide Screen Movies.” Possibly 70mm test screened in the US.  70mm prints reportedly issued in parts of Europe beginning late-’63.
Guns Of Navarone, The NA (Japan) CinemaScope 6-Track Stereo Columbia US 35mm release in 1961.
