70mm Blow Up
1983

  Updated 26-01-2010
Title Format Opening Sound Studio Notes
Around The World In 80 Days (Re-Issue) Todd-AO April 29 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo Warner Bros. 70mm engagement in Seattle, WA (and perhaps elsewhere) featured a shortened 140-min Dolby Stereo version. This re-issue version was reportedly blown-up from 35mm reduction element (which is why it is included on this list). Re-issued nationwide in 35mm.
Blue Thunder Panavision May 13 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo Columbia The first of many John Badham movies released in 70mm.  Sneak preview with 70mm prints prior to release.  70mm trailers: “Krull,” “Breathless” and “Return Of The Jedi.”
Brainstorm Various Sept 30 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo MGM/UA 100+ 70mm prints. Objective scenes shot in 35mm (1.66:1) -- subjective “brainstorm” scenes lensed in 65mm (2.20:1). Original prints (both 70mm & 35mm) featured the aspect ratio changes in the horizontal plane. The DVD changes them in the vertical plane, creating a viewing experience that makes little sense to those unfamiliar with the theatrical presentation. 70mm trailer: “Yentl.”
Flashdance Spherical (1.85:1) NA 6-Track Dolby Stereo Paramount US 35mm release: April 15.  Reportedly released with 70mm prints in Europe. 70mm release unconfirmed. Title is listed on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb).
Keep, The Panavision Dec 16 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo Paramount US 70mm release unconfirmed. Title is listed in the book “Wide Screen Movies.” Advertised in 70mm on the trailers & one-sheets.
Krull Panavision July 29 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo Columbia 70mm trailer: “Yol”
Let’s Spend The Night Together Spherical (1.85:1) Feb 11 (USA) 6-Track Stereo Embassy Released in parts of Europe (possibly in 70mm) in 1982. One of many Rolling Stones concert films (a couple of which have been issued in some form of 70mm).  AKA: “Time Is On Our Side.”
Mahaan NA April (India) 6-Track Stereo NA
Never Say Never Again Panavision Oct 7 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo Warner Bros. World Premiere: Oct 6 (Los Angeles).  A bogus James Bond movie for sure, but we’ll take anything that’s offered in 70mm!  70mm trailer: ‘Deal Of The Century.’
Octopussy Panavision June 10 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo MGM/UA World Premiere: June 6 (London - 35mm).  70mm prints screened in a few US cities during release.
Raiders Of The Lost Ark (Re-Issue) Panavision Mar 25 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo Paramount The return of “The Return Of The Great Adventure.” Released on video in late ‘83, 30 months after initial release (so much for the six-month window).
Razia Sultan NA Sept (India) 6-Track Stereo NA
Return Of The Jedi J-D-C 25 May (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo 20th Century Fox Released with approximately 150 70mm prints.  70mm prints, for some reason, featured music from “Empire” during the opening crawl. Lucasfilm Ltd. introduced the THX Sound System in L.A. (Avco) and Dallas (North Park) for this release.  70mm trailer: “The Star Chamber.” Re-issued in 1985 (70mm) & ‘97 (35mm-digital).   AKA: “Star Wars: Episode VI - Return Of The Jedi.”
Right Stuff, The Spherical (1.85:1) Oct 21 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo Warner Bros. OAR blow-up. This won a much-deserved Oscar for Sound, as evidenced by listening to the six-track mix.  Snerak previewed with 70mm prints prior to release.
Star Chamber, The Panavision Aug 5 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo 20th Century Fox
Star Wars/The Empire Strikes Back (Double Feature Re-Issue) Panavision July 29 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo 20th Century Fox This was a “Star Wars”/”Empire” double feature re-issue (with some 70mm prints) in selected US regions.
Staying Alive Spherical (1.85:1) July 15 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo Paramount World Premiere: June 11 (Los Angeles).  OAR blow-up.
Superman III Panavision June 17 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo Warner Bros. 70mm trailer: “Risky Business”
WarGames Spherical (1.85:1) June 3 (USA) 6-Track Dolby Stereo MGM/UA 70mm trailers: “Strange Brew” & “Brainstorm”
