The 70mm Newsletter
Written by: Christian LerchIssue 47 - December 1996
I study sound engineering at the film school in Potsdam-Babelsberg, Germany and I am working on my diploma paper at present. It is titled "Surround Sound In The Cinema". My fist article deals with the history of surround in the cinema. Among other wide screen systems I will be engaged in the sound systems of the different 70mm formats. I am looking for technical as well as dramaturgical information on the surround channel of Todd-AO and other 70mm formats.

If you have any articles about that published in your newsletter, I would be very thankful, if you could send me copies.

Questions are:

*Was a delay implemented in the surround channel of the 70mm magnetic sound like in CinemaScope, which there was used in order to fix the localization of the stage speakers?
*In some theatres the surround channel fed speakers mounted on the side walls, in other cinemas it fed speakers at the ceiling. For which version the films were mixed, respectively, which version was preferred in the dubbing studios?
*What was mixed in the surround channel?
*Was there a change in the surround channel from CinemaScope to Todd-AO?
*How did the use of the surround channel change from the 6-channel application in Todd-AO to the current digital 6-channel Dolby Digital, DTS and SDDS?
*How was the mixdown from 6-channel to mono done, if a 70mm film was copied to 35mm CinemaScope with optical sound?
