Once again over the past few months there has not been much in the way of 70mm presentations in London. "Lawrence of Arabia" returned for a short season at the Curzon Mayfair, this was followed by a return season of "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Shaftsbury Avenue opened its doors again on August 30th with a Gala screening of "What's Cooking?". It is now a 4 screen cinema and has been renamed Odeon Covent Garden. It still has the ability to show 70mm.

It also looks as if the Odeon Haymarket will never open again as a cinema. It suffered a lot of flood damage during the rebuilding of the office block which sits on top of the cinema. This is a shame as this was really a nice single screen cinema, and in its heyday was a little gold mine, playing many exclusive presentations for a long while. It opened with "Barabbas" in 70mm with massive publicity, but has slipped away unnoticed by many.

Listed below is an September 2001 update of the cinemas in the West End that can still show 70mm:

Curzon Mayfair
Empire #1
National Film Theatre
Odeon Covent Garden
Oden Leicester Sq
Odeon West End
Plaza
UGC Trocadero
Warner West End

It is many years since some of these have shown anything in 70mm.
