 David Strohmaier. Picture by Thomas Hauerslev.As usual the Academy searched worldwide to find a suitable person to honor. We looked everywhere and quickly found the obvious choice. The vote was unanimous when we decided he was a worthy candidate as this year’s nominee. This year’s recipient of the Academy’s Roll of Honor is a film enthusiast from the professional side of the film industry. The Academy has decided to reward this person’s friendship with Bradford, his kind personality and his tireless work for wide screen history. He has indeed proven himself a worthy candidate. The person has long been a film history buff, even before graduating from film school in the early 1970s and starting his career at Warner Brothers. He is frequently spotted when he is attending old or obscure movies at an historic cinema in his home town. As film director, writer and editor for major studios such as Disney and 20th Century-Fox, he worked on many “movies of the week”, series pilots and episodes, including EPCOT documentaries at Disney and two CircleVision films made for their theme parks. Some of his more notable editing credits are "Northern Exposure", "Dangerous Minds", and three Alien Nation television movies. Our nominee is a very friendly and likeable person, and he has previously been our guest in Bradford back in 2002 – and on that occasion he also obtained free beers for several people in the Midland Hotel bar, although that is NOT an Academy selection criterion ;-). This man works in Hollywood, where, in addition to his daily routine, he sometimes presides over film presentations at the local “three-strip” cinema. He also served as the historical consultant to Paul Allen's Seattle Cinerama theatre restoration project. The person we have selected has a passionate enthusiasm for Cinerama – almost to the point of complete obsession, to put it mildly – we won’t ask his wife about this. He has taken this interest to the next level and produced his own documentary. His highly acclaimed commemoration project has played in festivals across the US and has helped launch a whole new generation of widescreen enthusiasts. We, the Bradford audience, were fortunate to see his film yesterday – and some of us even appeared in the end titles!!! The film is called "Cinerama Adventure" and the director is David Strohmaier. I warmly welcome David, to become the next member of the Academy of the Widescreen Weekend. |
