KARLSRUHE, Sep 1, 2011 /in70mm.com news. We have launched the 7th instalment of the “Todd-AO 70mm Festival“ to be held from 7 - 9 October 2011 at the Schauburg in Karlsruhe, Germany. For three days in October Filmtheater Schauburg celebrates the world of LARGE FORMAT film, by offering a series of epic films in 70mm - the HD of film formats. A variety of old 70mm films with a GALA performance of Kenneth Branagah's masterpiece "Hamlet" on Saturday evening. Some films are in their original versions and some "70mm Vintage Classics", are dubbed into German.

Once again spectacular large format process names like "Super Technirama 70", "MCS 70 Superpanorama" and "Ultra Panavision 70" will light up on the large 18 meter curved Cinerama screen.

Let us hope, that the splendour of 70mm not only serves our nostalgic dreams, but also offers the chance for a young audience to experience a historic and magic landmark of cinema.
Join us and be part of this unique event and share the excitement together with visitors from all around the world - including Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Denmark, England, USA and France - and hopefully many more.

We welcome our very special guest, Academy Award winner Mr. Kevin Brownlow to the Schauburg. Mr. Brownlow is flying in from England to give his “From Biograph to Fox Grandeur. Early Experiments in Large Format Presentations” lecture.

We are also very proud to have five vintage Canadian 70mm short films on the program. Short films are rarely seen in cinemas any more, but we can present no less than five of them in blazing 70mm with superb 6-track magnetic stereo. All of which are specially loaned to us by our friends in Canada.

70mm Films:

"Bela" in Sovscope 70
"The Greatest Story Ever Told" in Ultra Panavision 70
"The Bat Whispers" in 35mm restored version from 65mm Magnifilm original

Kevin Brownlow during a lecture. Image by Thomas Hauerslev

We are delighted that historian and preservationist Mr. Kevin Brownlow of Photoplay Productions has accepted our invitation to come and give a lecture.

Filmmaker, author, documentarian, and film historian/preservationist Kevin Brownlow was recognized in 2010 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences with their prestigious Honorary Governors Award “for the wise and devoted chronicling of the cinematic parade.”

Best known for his work documenting the history of the silent era, he has preserved and restored many silent classics, including "Intolerance", Abel Gance’s "Napoléon", "The Thief of Bagdad", "Ben-Hur", and "The Phantom of the Opera". Among his many other accomplishments, he also co-produced and directed the 1980 television documentary series, Hollywood, that traces the highlights of the silent era.

Canadian Short Films in 70mm at the Filmtheater Schauburg

Part of the record from "A Place To Stand"

We are very proud to announce a series of rare Canadian 70mm short films to be screened during the 7th Todd-AO Festival.

The titles are:
"A Place to Stand", "Where the North Begins", "Festival", "Seasons in the Mind" and
"Multiple Man".

Thanks to Eric Seguin of the National Film Board of Canada and Mike Hazelton, Manager, Attractions & Admissions, Ontario Place Corp, The government of Ontario and Paul Gordon for making this possible.

Filmtheater Schauburg

The Filmtheater Schauburg. Image by Thomas Hauerslev

One of very few original cinemas, still equipped with 70mm projectors. The huge screen is wide, curved and covered by a "Cinerama red" curtain. It’s the perfect framework to present 70mm with 6-track sound in Super Technirama 70, Todd-AO and Ultra Panavision 70.

Why is 70mm so special?

Vintage 70mm film. Image by Thomas Hauerslev

"in 70mm"
is unlike anything you have ever seen - a High Definition movie experience with extremely sharp images and crystal clear 6 track stereo.

"in 70mm"
is very realistic, almost three dimensional and can make everything you have ever seen pale into insignificance. But don't take our word for it - come and see for your self.
