The 65/70mm Workshop welcomes the suggested use of the 70mm format for specialist nature, geographical and scientific subjects, which lend themselves to the wide vista and grand spectacle that 70mm provides.
Importantly, the use of short running times, in the tradition of educational and informative shorts that used to be shown in cinemas, could make such production viable.
Major factual broadcasters such as the BBC, National Geographic, Discovery and other channels have long traditions of very high quality nature, geographic and scientific filmmaking. 70mm short films, in up to 9-channel DTS, would provide another market and platform for this output.
Indeed, co-productions should be possible, thus bringing costs down even further. Archival topics and special events could also be presented in the high-impact manner that only 70mm facilitates, and at reasonable cost.
The Workshop is very grateful to Mr. Chris Plaister for these ideas, and welcomes further written contributions from filmmakers and craftspeople on the possibilities this presents. | More in 70mm reading:
