Once again, Schauburg Cinerama is your home for a weekend dedicated to large, wide and incredibly sharp 70MM films. A celebration of nostalgia and modern state-of-the-art movie making. Together we stroll down memory lane with great adventures on the curved screen, in the grand style of an authentic roadshow cinema. Maybe, just maybe, we will be able to tickle your imagination. 70MM is back - again! The controversial director Quentin Tarantino is putting final touches to one of his most anticipated films in recent years. "The Hateful Eight", a western filmed in Ultra Panavision 70, a 65mm format, not used for a feature film since 1966. Ultra Panavision 70 requires big wide screens so the image does not look excessively letterboxed. Mr. Tarantino not only shot it in 65mm, but he is also going to present it with an overture, and an intermission, and feature an original score by the legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone. A courageous effort by a man who firmly believes in the magic of FILM. We hope to present it in 70mm at the 12th Todd-AO Festival in 2016. Christopher Nolan filmed a lot of his blockbuster "Interstellar" in 65mm 15 perf IMAX, and premiered it in 70MM across North America. Five cinemas across Europe also premiered "Interstellar" in 70mm. The analogue shows outperformed their digital siblings many times. We are very proud to present "Interstellar" in 70MM as our main Saturday night feature. Our friend Paul Thomas Anderson, who made "The Master" in 65mm in 2013, is also back with a 70MM blow-up of his latest adventure "Inherent Vice". With only three 70MM prints struck, we are proud to premiere it in Europe in grand style. Truly unique. 70MM is a format many really love. Fortunately, it seems 70MM will not go away. Nolan, Tarantino and Anderson are not alone. More and more are using 65mm as their creative film language. Large parts of "Jurassic World" was filmed with Panavision's 65mm cameras, and "Tomorrowland" was framed for 2,2:1 with Sony's F65 digital camera - after making tests with 65mm film and cameras. ARRI Group in Munchen has introduced the ALEXA 65, their latest digital camera and called it "65mm Reborn". The chip is formatted for 2,2:1 - the classic 70mm format. In Hollywood, two new short films in 65mm are in progress by young filmmakers. Let us cross our fingers for 70mm prints. In England, a new commercial has been shot in 65mm with the ARRI 765, to premiere digitally in 2016. Not since the Peter Stuyvesant cigarette advert (MCS 70) and "Shellarama" (Technirama) have commercials been filmed in large format. By the time of writing this, "Sunset Song", with exteriors filmed in 65mm with the ARRI 765, will premiere digitally in Toronto in September. Finally, we are still waiting to see "Ivanhoe" go before the 65mm cameras in Germany. The death of 70MM seems widely exaggerated. |

The Stones will rock you in 6-track and the great Dimitri Tiomkin presents Pyotr Ilyich and his music in SOVSCOPE 70. Solve a mystery with Larry "Doc" Sportello, and "Bigfoot" Bjornsen in mind-blowing colors. Explore wormholes, space-time, and astrophysics with Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine, or dangerous Aliens with lovely Sigourney Waver. Or try to imagine Anthony Quinn as the Pope of Panorama. From outer space to Rome and from Paris to New York, we have a very diverse program for you in 2015. All this in 70MM would not be the same without the Schauburg with its rich history, red curtains and curved screen. From the box-office lady who welcomes you in a friendly voice, to the rare GONG before the film begins, or the exhibited DP70 projector in the foyer. Did you notice the hand painted billboard above the entrance? Mr. Haas the last billboard painter of Karlsruhe. We are lucky to have him to keep this lost art form alive. It is traditional cinema virtues, which makes you feel welcome. Everything comes together in perfect harmony: audience, 70MM and Cinema. You become part of history in the great Schauburg. Something you cannot experience in 2K, 4K, at home or on your laptop. It has to be cinema. Welcome to 11th Todd-AO Festival at the Schauburg.
