 What follows is a chronology of 70mm six-track stereophonic sound feature-film presentations in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.The focus of this work is on 5-perf 70mm feature films and the cinemas in which they were exhibited. Short subjects, 8-perf and 15-perf (IMAX, Iwerks, etc.) and Special Venue presentations have not been included (but consideration will be given to adding them in a revision). The emphasis here is on the titles that received publicly-promoted, commercial exhibition in 70mm and their playdates. To facilitate an easy-to-reference title- and date-based layout, no details have been provided pertaining to the brand of 70mm (i.e. Todd-AO, Super Panavision, Ultra Panavision, Cinerama, D-150, etc.) or technical particulars of each presentation (i.e. O-neg source, inter-neg source, blow-up, pillarboxed, letterboxed, Dolby A, Dolby SR, five screen channels vs. three, baby boom, split surround, digital sound, etc.). Part 1: The 70mm-Equipped Cinemas CALGARY PLACE CINEMAS: Opened on June 19, 1969, at 333 4th Avenue SW in Calgary. This twin cinema had 626 seats in Cinema 1 and 444 seats in Cinema 2. The theatre was tri-plexed on April 10, 1981. Although equipped to show 70mm presentations, there is no known features to have been shown in this format. The ownership timeline was Famous Players Theatres (1970-1994). The cinema was closed on July 17, 1994. CAPITOL THEATRE : Opened on May 7, 1921, at 230 8th Avenue West in Calgary. This single-screen theatre had 1,570 seats. The first 70mm presentation was "Around the World in 80 Days" commencing July 17, 1958 and running until August 2, 1958. The last 70mm showing was "Gone With the Wind" February 14, 1968 running until May 7, 1968. The ownership timeline was Famous Players Theatres (1921-1972). The cinema was closed on April 16, 1972. CHINOOK THEATRE: Opened on September 29, 1965, at 6253 McLeod Trail in Calgary. This single-screen theatre had 718 seats. The first 70mm presentation (and venues debut attraction) was "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines" on September 29, 1965, running until November 10, 1965. The last 70mm showing was "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" on May 24, 1989, running until September 28, 1989. The ownership timeline was Famous Players Theatres (1965-1990). The cinema was closed on September 16, 1990. EAU CLAIR MARKET CINEMAS: Opened on August 13, 1993, at 200 Barclay Parade SW in Calgary. This five-screen cinema had a total of 1,458 seats (289, 293, 195, 213, 468) and 70mm projection capabilities featured in the largest house. A sixth screen, with seating for 303 was added when the IMAX next door shut down on July 18, 2004. The first 70mm presentation was a midnight showing of "Pink Floyd: The Wall" on May 25, 1996 and the last 70mm showing was a midnight showing of "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" on July 20, 1996. The 70mm facilities were only used for nine films for midnight shows. The ownership timeline was Cineplex Odeon Theatres (1993-present). The cinema is open and showing movies (though its 70mm capabilities have probably long since been removed). NORTH HILL CINERAMA (aka North Hill Cinema, Northill Cinema): Opened on December 21, 1967, at the North Hill Shopping Centre,1705 16th Avenue North West in Calgary. This single-screen Cinerama theatre had 785 seats. The first 70mm presentation was "Far From the Madding Crowd" on February 21, 1968 running until April 9, 1968. The last 70mm showing was "Geronimo: An American Legend" on December 10, 1993 running until January 6, 1994. The ownership timeline was National General Cinemas (1967-1970), managed by Famous Players Theatres (1970-1973), Canadian Theatres (1973-1978), Canadian Odeon Theatres (1978-1984) and Cineplex Odeon Theatres (1984-1999). The cinema was closed on August 29, 1999. NORTHLAND VILLAGE CINEMAS: Opened on August 19, 1988 at 5111 Northland Drive NW in Calgary. The five-screen cinema had a total of 1,360 seats (221, 258, 403, 257, 221) and 70mm projection capabilities featured in the largest house. The first 70mm presentation was "Die Hard" on August 26, 1988 running until November 10, 1988. The last 70mm showing was "Far and Away" on July 1, 1992 until July 9, 1992. The ownership timeline was Cineplex Odeon Theatres (1988-2002). The cinema was closed on May 20, 2002. MARDA THEATRE (aka Odeon Theatre): Opened on January 18, 1952 at 2101 33rd Avenue SW in Calgary. The single-screen theatre had 496 seats. Named changed to Odeon Theatre in 1964 when the theatre was sold to Odeon Theatres Canada Ltd. On June 20, 1975, the theatre was twinned with 529 seats in theatre 1 and 349 seats in theatre 2. The first 70mm presentation was "The Sound of Music" on March 31, 1965, running until August 16, 1966. The last 70mm showing was "Empire of the Sun" on March 4, 1988, running until May 5, 1988. The ownership timeline was Marc and Mada Jenkins (1952-1964), Odeon Theatres (1964-1978), Canadian Odeon Theatres (1978-1984) and Cineplex Odeon Theatres (1984-1988). The theatre was closed on August 18,1988. ODEON THEATRE (see Marda Theatre) PALACE THEATRE: Opened on October 25, 1921 at 219 8th Avenue West in Calgary. This single-screen theatre had 1,787 seats. The first 70mm presentation was "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" on June 4, 1982 running until September 15, 1982. The last 70mm showing was "Batman" and "Lethal Weapon 2" on October 13, 1989 running until November 16, 1989. The ownership timeline was Allen Theatres (1921-1927) and Famous Players Theatres (1921-1990). The theatre was closed on February 8, 1990. PALLISER SQUARE CINEMAS: Opened on December 25, 1970, at 60-115 9th Avenue SE in Calgary. This twin cinema had 656 seats in Cinema 1 and 569 seats in Cinema 2. Both cinemas were equipped for 70mm presentations. The first 70mm presentation was "The Empire Strikes Back" on May 21, 1980, running until October 9, 1980. The last 70mm showing was a "Pink Floyd: The Wall" midnight show on June 11, 1994. The ownership timeline was Famous Players Theatres (1970-1994). The cinema was closed on October 16, 1994. SHOWCASE GRAND (see Sherman Grand Theatre) SHERMAN GRAND THEATRE (aka Grand Theatre, Showcase Grand Theatre): Opened on February 5, 1912 at 608 1st Street SW in Calgary. This single screen theatre had 1,500 seats. Twinned with dividing wall into side-by-side theatres on September 15, 1972, with 561 seats in theatre 1 and 568 seats in theatre 2. On December 20, 1985, remodeled and reopened as Showcase Grand Theatre. The theatre was piggyback twinned, with both theatres equipped for 70mm presentations. Theatre 1 had 647 seats and theatre 2 had 363 seats. The first and only 70mm presentations were "A Chorus Line" on December 20, 1985, running until January 30, 1986 and "Out of Africa" on December 20, 1985, running until February 27, 1986. The ownership timeline was Senator James Lougheed (1912-1936), Baron Enterprises (1936-1969), Odeon Theatres (1969-1981), Canadian Odeon Theatres (1981-1984), and Cineplex Odeon Theatres (1984-1999). The theatre was closed on November 21, 1999. SOUTHCENTRE CINEMA: Opened on November 26, 1986, at 100 Anderson Road SE in Calgary. The seven-screen cinema had 70mm projection capabilities featured in two of the largest houses. The first 70mm presentation was "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" on November 26, 1986, running in Cinema 2 until March 26, 1987 and in Cinema 4 until December 23, 1986. The last 70mm showing was "Patriot Games" on June 5, 1992, running until August 13, 1992. The ownership timeline was Famous Players Theatres (1986-1999). The cinema was closed on April 22, 1999. SOUTHLAND CINEMAS 4: Opened December 18, 1981, at Southland Drive and Macleod Trail SW in Calgary. The four-screen cinemas have a total of 1,036 seats (467, 180, 182, 207) with 70mm projection capabilities featured in the largest house. The first 70mm presentation was "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" on October 29, 1982 running until November 18, 1982. The last 70mm showing was "Staying Alive" on September 16, 1983 running until September 22, 1983. The ownership timeline was Canadian Odeon Theatres (1981-1984) and Cineplex Odeon Theatres (1984-2001). The cinema was closed on April 17, 2001. SUNRIDGE MALL CINEMAS 5: Opened on June 8, 1984 in the Sunridge Mall at 36th Street and 26th Avenue in Calgary. The five cinemas have a total of 1,671 seats, making it the largest multiplex theatre in Calgary. Cinema 1, with 629-seats, is equipped for 70mm projection capabilities. The first 70mm presentation was "2010" on December 7, 1984 until February 7, 1985. The last 70mm showing was "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" on May 24, 1989 running until July 27, 1989. The ownership timeline was Famous Players Theatres (1984-2002). The cinema closed on May 2, 2002. UPTOWN THEATRE: Opened on March 30, 1951, at 612 8 Avenue SW in Calgary. The single-screen theatre had 1,100 seats. The 70mm system was installed on March 21, 1960. It was twinned on March 23, 1973 with 551 seats in Theatre 1 and 484 seats in Theatre 2. The first 70mm presentation was "Solomon and Sheba" on March 21, 1960 until April 10, 1960. The final 70mm showing was a second-run of "Top Gun" on January 16, 1987, running until January 29, 1987. The ownership timeline was Odeon Theatres (1951-1981), Canadian Odeon Theatres (1981-1984), Cineplex Odeon Theatres (1984-1989). Theatre closed on January 26, 1989. In 1993 it became a mixed used venue until it closed permanently on November 6, 2011.
