Sir Christopher Wren, the Architect of St Paul’s Cathedral, the most illustrious building in London, was memorialised there with these words:

“If you seek his monument look around you.”

Many of us who attended the 2026 BSC Expo at The Evolution Centre in London recently, looked around and saw Joe Dunton's memorial. Still mourning his passing, we were heartened to see the new Joe Dunton BSC Seminar Theatre at the heart of the BSC Expo 2026. Specialist Seminars were given there, by leading experts in the Cinematographic industry, to packed houses of enthusiastic professionals. The Seminars are also now available online, courtesy of the British Society of Cinematographers:

• Go to NO PREP, NO PANIC , TAKING ON A PROJECT LATE IN THE DAY
• Go to IT ‘S JUST PAN AND TILTING, RIGHT?
• Go to COLOUR PIPELINES FOR ON-SET AND POST-PRODUCTION

The BSC Expo itself was very well attended in spite of the stormy weather which reflected the hard year which the industry had just endured. The usual tote bags and handouts were conspicuous by their absence, as exhibitors and manufacturers were forced to tighten their belts.

Of special interest to readers of this journal and the industry in general, was the exhibition of a modern miracle of Engineering, the 65mm K65K Speed Camera, which recently had good coverage. It was a great pleasure to meet Luca Bonicalza the talented engineer behind the creation of this amazing camera. He gave generously of his time as we put the world to rights at The Talent Bar in the Evolution Exhibition Centre. He told us of his hopes and plans for the future and better days to come for the industry. Apart from clearly being a gifted engineer, he was great company.

Talking of great companies, that great company Kodak featured Luca’s ground breaking new K65K 65mm Speed Camera as the leading exhibit at the Kodak stand. It clearly attracted a great deal of interest, reflecting the growing renaissance of 65mm Cinematography and 70mm Cinema Exhibition.

As founding father of the BSC Expo, and a pioneer of Innovative Cinematography Joe Dunton, I feel, would have warmly approved.

For the record, in addition to the three seminars listed above, the BSC YouTube channel includes Retrospectives and interviews with Douglas Milsome, Roger Deakins plus many others.

The BSC Expo is held each year at The Evolution Centre and is an easy walk from the Battersea Power Station stop on the London Underground. For those that seek a novel way to arrive the expo is readily accessible from the Thames River Bus service where the ‘water taxi’ affords a good view of the London bridges and iconic buildings.

The Expo was open, by invitation, on Thursday evening with public days on Friday (10-am to 7-pm) and Saturday (10-am to 5-pm). The Expo is free to attend, pre-registration is essential, and as a bonus many special lectures, presentations and seminars are held. The seminar programme for 2026 was –

FRIDAY 13th FEBRUARY

• Seminar 1 - "Virtual Production Gone Wrong" delivered by iMAG.

• Seminar 2 - “Operating - It’s Just Pan and Tilting Right?” delivered by the BSC.

• Seminar 3 - “The Importance of Colour in the Eye of the Cinematographer” delivered by Filmlight.

• Seminar 4 - “Shooting ‘Bedlam’ in 65mm: Anamorphic Storytelling on the Ursa Cine 17k 65” delivered by Blackmagic Design.

• Seminar 5 - “No Prep, No Panic - Taking on a Project late in the day” delivered by the BSC.

• Seminar 6 - “Colour Pipelines For On-Set and Post-Production” hosted by AJA Video.

SATURDAY 14th FEBRUARY

• Seminar 7 11:00 - “How A DOP Chooses The Perfect Camera and Lens Package’” delivered by One Stop Films.

• Seminar 8 12:15 - “Mastering Light & Colour by Aputure” delivered by Aputure.

• Seminar 9 13:30 - “One Feature, Four Weeks, and Profoto Cinema Lighting - A Behind-the-Scenes Look at “The Butler” delivered by Profoto.

• Seminar 10 14:30 - “The Architecture of Action: Filmmakers, Stunts and Storytelling In Sync” delivered by RED.

• Seminar 11 15:30 - “The Cinematographer’s Signature” delivered by the BSC.

For the 2026 Expo I decided to attend on Saturday and arrived around 10:30 to find a short queue and a very efficient security process to check the bags and tickets. Inside the venue there are lockers and a cloakroom to drop off any bags and cameras (all image recording equipment bigger than a mobile telephone requires prior approval). Within minutes I was inside the venue and the first item on my list of must see was the K65K in the main exhibition hall. The Kodak stand had a prime position, adjacent to the BSC, and the new camera was generating quite a lot of interest and was clearly a star of the show.

Next on my planned route was Sony, but I got deflected by Arri as I had to take a look at their latest compact and lightweight 65-mm hardware. The Sony stand never disappoints and even though this year they did not have a Maverick cockpit or an enormous screen the 3D displays were a joy. The new TV’s can acquire and track the viewers eyes, even through spectacles, and provide an amazing 3D holographic effect without the need for additional 3D glasses; there is of course a downside as the display is optimised for a single viewer as it tracks one pair of eyes. I have always enjoyed 3D and stereoscopic images and found the hardware easy to use and fascinating. Not too sure about practical applications beyond usage in a museum to provide access to precious artifacts or in an architecture setting.

After looking at the Sony stand, I decided to be a little disciplined and move left/right and up/down to ensure that I visited everywhere. Visitor should allow a few hours as cranes, tracks, editing, archiving, processing, lights, sound equipment, motorcycle rigs for cameras, cars and all manner of hardware are on display. Some exhibits may appear dry, but all require attention. If any of the seminars appeal, they are free to attend although attendance is on a first come basis, so factor this into your plans and arrive at the theatre early.

One intriguing vehicle on show was camera car on the Brownian Motion stand, and this comprised a custom built two seater with a multi-camera rig for full 360⁰ image recording.

After touring the main hall, I followed the same disciplined approach and visited the smaller hall with its mezzanine, then I visited the outdoor exhibits.

Complimentary drinks are available on many stands, plus there is a bar and a food hall so no need to leave the venue.

I attended several of the seminars in the Joe Dunton theatre, this is a temporary auditorium built onto the exhibition space. As expected image quality and sound was excellent, and I found the seminars to be both entertaining and informative. Several of the panel members are well known in the industry and are generally very happy to answer questions after the seminar, pose for selfies and sign items. Two of the seminars that were particularly good were firstly the ‘Architecture of Action’ delivered by RED.

The final seminar of the day was ‘The Cinematographer’s Signature’ and was hosted by the new, ie the 34th BSC president, Oliver Stapleton and included the always entertaining Diana Olifirova plus well-respected M David Mullen and the sometimes called bad boy of the movies ie Sean Ellis.
