Howard on the phone, "Please show it on a BIG screen"

"One Battle After Another" a very funny political thriller, looked great in 35mm VistaVision October 29, 2025 at NYC's Regal Union Square, which opened in 1998 in Lower Manhattan and now has 17 screens. The subway stops at Union Square.

Usually when I travel from Philadelphia to NYC to see new 70mm films, I see them in the historic auditorium of the City Cinemas Village East, which is half a mile from Union Square. The Village East, is where earlier this year I saw “The Brutalist" which though filmed in VistaVision, was shown in 70mm. The Village East was showing "One Battle After Another" in 70mm so I walked over there to photograph the movie title on the marquee. Uptown, the AMC Lincoln Square, was showing the film on its enormous screen in IMAX 70mm, but I chose to see the film in VistaVision as the print was made directly from the camera negative! And, I chose to see it in VistaVision because "One Battle After Another" is the first new film shown in that format since "One-Eyed Jacks" in 1961.

This was the first time I was inside the Regal Union Square. Auditorium 13 is the RPX auditorium, has Dolby Atmos, and with 277 seats is the second largest in the multiplex. This is not the auditorium that 70mm screens are presented in. I found a comment online, which I expect is accurate, that the total screen size, before masking, is 43.5 feet x 24 feet. Custom masking was installed for the VistaVision run so the movie was presented in 1.5 aspect ratio. Surround sound was great. The full house applauded at the end.

Giant movie poster with a vintage looking pay phone which actually rang, and when answered, told people to see the movie.
