“Far and Away”: The 70mm Engagements
“He left behind everything he knew for the only thing he ever wanted.” |

The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
presentations of “Far and Away” in North America. These were the cinemas
worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“Far and Away” was among ten confirmed first-run films released in 1992 with
70mm prints for selected engagements. One-hundred sixty-three 70mm prints
were reportedly struck for distribution in North America (representing about
ten percent of the film’s total print run), which places it among the
industry’s ten-highest large-format print orders in history and the highest
in Universal Studios’ history. The Imagine production and Universal release
— directed by Ron Howard (“Cocoon,” “Willow,” “Backdraft”) and starring Tom
Cruise and Nicole Kidman — opened May 22nd.
Most of the first-run 70mm presentations cited in this work were also shown
in a sneak preview screening May 9th and/or 16th. The film was screened at
the Cannes Film Festival May 18th and an invitational preview was held May
19th at Samuel Goldwyn in Beverly Hills.
For the release of “Far and Away,” Fox employed the services of Lucasfilm’s
Theatre Alignment Program (TAP) to evaluate and approve the cinemas selected
to book a 70mm print.
The 70mm prints of “Far and Away” featured full-frame imagery from 65mm
cinematography (Panavision Super 70) and Six-Track Dolby Stereo (dual
inventory of “A”- and “SR”-encoded “baby boom” format prints).
Universal circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for
“Death Becomes Her,” “Housesitter,” “Mr. Baseball,” “Out on a Limb,”
“Raising Cain” and “Sneakers” during the release of “Far and Away.” Other
studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well. Ultimately,
any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “Far and Away”
varied by venue and screening.
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) has been included in
parenthesis following the applicable cinema name.

Note that some of the presentations included in this listing may have been
presented in 35mm during the latter week(s) of engagement due to contractual
terms or print damage and the distributor’s unwillingness to supply a 70mm
replacement print or because the booking was moved to a non-70mm-equipped
auditorium within a multiplex. As well, the reverse may have been true in
some cases whereas a booking began with a 35mm print because the lab was
unable to complete the 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery
or the exhibitor negotiated a mid-run switch to 70mm. In these cases, any
35mm portion of the engagement (or movement out of a branded auditorium) has
been included in the duration figure.
