to "Cinema Museum Schauburg" and our 3rd Widescreen Weekend. Since 2005 we have held several weekend-long festivals, with the three-day Todd-AO weekend in October. The Todd-AO festival will be held again this year for the sixth time and is as always dedicated to the reproduction, research and historical appreciation of the 70mm format. |

 In addition to the Todd-AO festivals, we have also started a Widescreen
Weekend in June, and previously festivals include "In
Technicolor, CinemaScope & stereophonischen Magnet-Ton" (2008) and "In
VistaVision, Technicolor and Perspecta sound" (2009).
Both of which have been very well received with our audience. We continue
this tradition and launch our most ambitious festival so far on June 5 and
6, 2010.We will celebrate the 1970s and perhaps the most unique of all cinema sound systems - Universal Picture's SENSURROUND. Not seen - or heard - regularly in nearly 30 years, it is again - for one time only, possible to listen to the magic of Sensurround. It has taken us three years to plan the sound system and the prints, and we are very proud to announce that we will show all 5 official Sensurround films during one LOUD weekend in June 2010. We pay tribute to a "lost" sound format for two unique days only. All films are presented in their original German version and full SENSURROUND sound. You can only see and HEAR this in a cinema, so don't think twice about it. Tickets are selling fast. The Schauburg cinema is the only place to experience SENSURROUND. |

About Sensurround |
|
 The
Sensurround Model II system developed by MCA Universal brings a new
dimension to the motion picture theatre. It is designed to generate special
audible and sub audible effects not yet possible to reproduce on presently
available systems. The audience will actually be participating in the film.
The torso will vibrate. So will the diaphragm. Flesh and auditory nerves
will receive the sensations one might feel while experiencing the event
depicted on the screen. Rather than the structure-shaking resulting from a
natural disaster, this vibrating movement is actually airborne. Although
some vibration can be felt - on thin wall surfaces, the amplitude is so
small that no appreciable displacement can be measured. Also, the
Sensurround effects will not cause hearing damage. The system is composed of
high-level electro-acoustic with solid-state power amplifiers capable of up
to 1000 watts of audio power. The system develops 100 to 120 dB sound
pressure level (SPL) on the "C" scale in the theatre.

 Los
Angeles is the natural site for a film about earthquakes: they happen there
frequently, and the landscape is familiar to moviegoers from thousands of
films. A huge number of ongoing vignettes which include cameos from numerous
celebrities and stars are tied together by the ongoing efforts of architect
Graff (Charleton Heston) to rescue his estranged spoiled-rich-girl wife (Ava
Gardner), while helping out with the ongoing rescue efforts taking place
around him and while trying to determine what has happened to his mistress
Denise (Genvieve Bujold). The rumbling sound effect designed for this film (Sensurround)
won a "Best Sound" Oscar for the film in 1975.

 An expensive war epic, Midway emulates The Longest Day and Tora! Tora! Tora!
in attempting to re-create a famous World War II battle from both the
American and Japanese viewpoints. The 1942 battle of Midway was the turning
point of the War in the Pacific; the Japanese invasion fleet was destroyed,
and America's string of humiliating defeats was finally broken. Though the
battle itself was sufficiently dramatic to fill two films, Midway also has
plotline involving the mixed-race relationship between Ensign Garth (Edward
Albert), son of Navy Captain Matt Garth (Charlton Heston), and Haruko Sakura
(Christina Kokubo), a Hawaiian girl of Japanese descent. The real-life
personages depicted herein include American Admirals Nimitz (Henry Fonda),
Halsey (Robert Mitchum) and Spruance (Glenn Ford), and Japanese Admiral
Yamamoto (Toshiro Mifune, his voice once again dubbed by Paul Frees, whom
Mifune personally selected for the job). For its original road show release,
Midway was offered in the "Sensurround" process, which electronically shook
and vibrated the audience's chairs during the battle sequences.

Nutsoid Timothy Bottoms sabotages an amusement-park roller coaster, killing several innocent revelers. After several other acts of terrorism, Bottoms (whose character is credited as Young Man) presents his demands to the authorities via audio tape: one million dollars, or he'll stage five roller-coaster disasters simultaneously in five different parks. Because detective Harry Calder George Segal evinces a grudging respect for the elusive extortionist, Bottoms declares that only Detective Calder will be permitted to deliver the money. Thus the stage is set for an explosive climax, which during the film's original run was accompanied by the Sensurround effect, a gimmick that electronically caused the filmgoer's chairs to begin shaking and vibrating during the "thrill scenes." As with most disaster flicks of the era, Rollercoaster is top-heavy with "guest stars," including Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Harry Guardino, and Susan Strasberg.  After the series's cancellation, the pilot was edited together into a new
theatrical release, with certain scenes trimmed or edited out completely.
This release is notable for the incorporation of the Sensurround enhancement
system first introduced in the film "Earthquake" in 1974, and is considered by
most critics as perhaps the only film where the technology was used
properly. It was, in fact, the last of only four films ever released in the
US to feature Sensurround.
