"Death On the Nile" -- Kenneth Branagh's eagerly-awaited next 70mm film is working through post-production. Word is that a well-polished (but probably not final) version is being seen by a few key executives at in-house screening rooms (via DCP.) It will be a while yet before the 70mm prints will be done, since there are always some final "tweaks" to things like the score and editorial concerns, etc. But it's still (as of now) on track for an October 9, 2020 opening. One staffer said it looked really good, which is a real tease for those of us who must wait several months (at least) to see it.

It was announced a couple of days ago that The Astor Cinema in Melbourne will continue to run after the beginning of April "äs is", that is to say, pretty much as before. The lease is to be taken over by Palace Cinemas, a local cinema chain specialising in the more discerning part of the market and sympathetic to an imaginative programming schedule. (They have made a policy of retaining film projectors in their locations). They perhaps can be compared to the Picturehouses chain in Britain, which now runs Pictureville. I would assume that they see a place for 70mm screenings. George Florence is to be a programming adviser. Palace cinemas is run by an Italian family, the Zeccolas, who have been in the Melbourne cinema business since that late 1960s.

"Windjammer" and "Cinerama Holiday" producer Borden Mace have passed away November 21, 2014 in Salisbury, Connecticut.

Jurrasic World: “We’re shooting 35mm and 65mm film. We’re also using an aspect ratio that hasn’t been seen theatrically in a very long time. The movie will be presented in 2 to 1. It’s basically a middle ground between 2.35 and 1.85. It allows us enough height to fit humans and dinosaurs into a single frame, without giving up that sense of scope. It’s very close to the ratio of the digital IMAX screens, so it will look great in large format. I think other filmmakers will want to give it a try when they see how it looks. It’s very comfortable.” Colin Trevorrow, The film’s director

If any of in70mm.com readers by any chance know of the existence of a 70mm/5p KEM/viewer/flatbed, a big Hollywood director is looking for one. He has begun work on a new 65mm production and would like to acquire or rent a unit. Any feedback you might be able to offer would be very helpful.

His monologue occurs about 20 minutes into Season 2 Episode 7. It also caught the eye of this writer.

A 70MM Quiz. Guess a Large Format film, shot in Ultra Panavision 70

Some hints: It was a short subject, and it was shown with a feature film. It was shown only 7 times in 1989 in Japan, along with an older feature film. The short was projected on a 25m wide screen at 30 fps. It was part of a festival, and not part of a special venue attraction nor a World's Fair / Expo. It was accompanied by a live orchestra and chorus. Lillian Gish did the narration.

"The Master" Review from the London Evening Standard:

Moreover, Anderson has filmed in rare, 65mm film stock, with the film being shown in one cinema at least in 70mm projection. At the press screening this week, this antique technology broke down after 20 minutes and the film was started from the beginning again in digital projection — a useful opportunity to appreciate that while digital offers clarity, the old film stock has richer colours and greater emotional impact. See it this way if you can.

25.08.2012, 5:25 am: This just in from our Hollywood source:

"Previous report about the Village Theatre in L.A. being set up to handle a 70mm run of P.T. Anderson's new movie, "The Master", did not pan out, for whatever reason(s). But now, reports are that DP70s will be installed (one each) in the Arclight Hollywood screen #3, and at one of the Landmark 12 screens in West L.A., so there will be two 70mm prints running in L.A. when the movie opens. Additional details indicate that there will be 8 or 9 total prints, so clearly there will be other venues showing it in 70mm. Known other locations include the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX, and several others, names to be confirmed before too long."

DECEMBER 2010

Latest gossip from "the film stage" is the news about the recovery of the famous 17 cut minutes of Super Panavison 70 footage from the master piece "2001: A Space Odyssey", which Mr. Kubrick cut just a few days after the premiere. The 17 minutes of footage was originally planned to be a part of Mr. Douglas Trumbull's documentary "2001: Beyond the Infinite The Making of A Masterpiece". Since Warner Brothers appears to have abandoned it, it's questionable if the public will ever see the cut footage. The material was located in a salt mine in Kansas (where movie companies have stored film material for decades, because of the stable temperature conditions). There is no detailed information if the trims (cut footage) have sound, being 65mm negative, or 70mm film with striped sound.

Deleted scenes included:

• Some shots from the “Dawn of Man” sequence were removed and a new scene was inserted where an ape pauses with the bone it is about to use as a tool. The new scene was a low-angle shot of the monolith, done in order to portray and clarify the connection between the man-ape using the tool and the monolith.
• Some shots of Frank Poole jogging in the centrifuge were removed.
• An entire sequence of several shots in which Dave Bowman searches for the replacement antenna part in storage was removed.
• A scene where HAL severs radio communication between the “Discovery” and Poole’s pod before killing him was removed. This scene explains a line that stayed in the film in which Bowman addresses HAL on the subject.
• Some shots of Poole’s space walk before he is killed.

"Can Can" work completed some time ago. Unfortunately, due to the fading issues in the original camera negative (both horizontal fading at the cuts, as well as east-west fading from poor storage), Fox/FotoKem were not able to make a new 70mm print from the negative.

Instead, a new 65mm IP from the negative as a preservation element has been made, and then Fotokem performed a huge amount of HD restoration. No new print, sadly, but it will make a passable Blu-ray. Hopefully, as technology becomes better, faster, and cheaper, Fox/FotoKem will be able to improve on it in the years to come.

"Windjammer" 35mm composite print was returned to the Swedish archive after scanning in Hollywood, and the roadshow prologue was also returned to owner during first week of January 2010. Work continues on making a Blu-ray and DVD.
