One of the perceived obstacles to shooting major and appropriate
productions on 65mm today is the cited cost and complexity of
visual effects work. However, the 1996 65mm production of "Hamlet" employed digital effects working at both 4K and 5K resolutions. 4K is today becoming more frequent on 35mm productions for both VFX and Digital Intermediate work. Costs of storage and manipulating data at 4K are falling, and certainly have fallen since 1996. It would seem that today it should be more realistic and achievable to carry out VFX on the 65mm format, preferably at 5K resolution, so as to preserve image quality. The Workshop would welcome debate on this subject, and any opinions from visual effects artists in the field.
