The 70mm Newsletter

Written by: Thomas Hauerslev Issue 36 - December 1994
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all the members and readers to The 70mm Newsletter No 36. This is my first Newsletter as editor. I hope I can live up to your expectations with a, hopefully, interesting Newsletter no 36. I would like to thank Johan Wolthuis for his efforts to raise the interest in 70mm. A Sisyphean labor. Also for believing in me as a suitable successor as editor. Johan will remain as secretary of the 70mm Association.

I am 31 years of age, lives in Copenhagen with Charlotte. We are expecting our first baby December 23. I have been a projectionist since 1983. I am generally interested in everything about film, however, mostly about film technology and especially all aspects about 70mm. Some of the 70mm films that have given me great pleasure are: "Lawrence of Arabia", "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". The last named is only partly filmed in Super Panavision 70 but it is still a great movie.

My goal with the Newsletter is to tell everyone who has an interest in 70mm that people really care. It does make a difference to film in 65mm. It is necessary to tell people in the film industry that cinema audience do care about picture quality. It is decisive to let the filmmakers know. Let them know that 70mm is the ultimate in cinema projection today, digital sound or not. There is no substitute. Filmmakers need all the encouragement we can give them.

In this issue you will find Johan Wolthuis' report of what happened during the 70mm Promotion Tour. In the next issue, due in February 1995, you will find a more in-depth report with pictures too. It also gives me great pleasure to present the news of a new short 70mm film from Norway.

One of the major things for The International 70mm Association is to keep track of all known 70mm films.

Most US films are very well documented. It is not the case with European films and especially those made in the former east Europe. I would be very happy if our readers would add any information they can to the following list of 70mm films: (Format in parentheses)
"Années Defeu" (Unknown) 1961, "La sentinelle endormie" (Unknown) 1965 "Die Fahne von Kriwoj Rog" (Unknown) 1966, "La terre se Repose" (unknown) 1967, "Defa 70" (Defa 70) 1967, "Hauptman Florian von der Mühle" (Defa 70) 1968, "Du bist min, Ein deutsche Tagebuch" (Defa 70) 1969, "Szerelmi almok listz" (MCS - Superpanorama 70) 1970. "Goya" (Defa 70) 1971, "K.L.K. an P.T.X. die Rote Kapell" (Defa 70) 1971, "Signale" (Defa 70) 1971 "Eolema" (Defa 70) 1972 "Orpheus in der Unterwelt" (Defa 70) 1974

Newsletter No 40 will be a special double anniversary issue with the title: 70mm: state of the art 1995. It will be a survey of 70mm as of 1995. The 100th year anniversary of the Cinema. The issue will cover a list of all 70mm films, 65mm cameras, laboratories, 70mm projectors, 70mm cinemas and much much more.

I would be happy to get all the help I can from the members. If you have any suggestions don't hesitate to write me a letter. Let me know what do you prefer to read about. As a service to new members I have included in this issue a list of all back issues. All of which are still available as photocopies.

1995 will be a very exciting year with a few 70mm projects in the pipeline and at least two 70mm festivals in progress. One in Bradford, England and one in Aalborg, Denmark. Also due is a 70mm exhibition in September 1995 at the Nederlands Filmuseeum in Amsterdam, Holland.

And finally I would like to wish all members and their families a merry Christmas and a peaceful new year.
