7th European Large Format Filmmakers Symposium 4 to 7 March 2000

Written By: Janet Wilson Issue 60 - March 2000
Euromax, the European association of the 15 perf/70mm film industry is proud to announce that the 7th European Large Format Filmmakers Symposium will take place at Futuroscope, Poitiers in France from 4-7 March. Aimed at newcomers to the world of large format as well as those with much experience, the Symposium will be devoted to issues surrounding large format film production and distribution.

As the European Park of the Moving Image, Futuroscope is the ideal setting for the conference. With five different, architecturally stunning, IMAX theatres, Futuroscope is the only place where you can see every IMAX format, including the only Solido - combining IMAX Dome and IMAX 3D images, and the world's only IMAX Magic Carpet.

The Symposium will offer panel sessions, workshops and case studies as well as large format film screenings, all aimed at increasing awareness of all aspects of production and distribution. The entire process of making a large format film will be covered in the sessions, from project development to marketing and distributing a film. Panels will comprise a range of industry professionals from both Europe and North America, all of whom have extensive experience in the medium. All proceedings will be in English.

The European Picture

Although the catalogue of available 15perf/70mm films now totals more than 150, only a small percentage of these have been European made and those produced here to date have largely failed to find an international market. However European large format production looks set to increase with an ever greater number of producers successfully financing projects and an emerging technical base able to support those productions.
In Europe there are currently thirty-two 15perf/70mm theatres in operation and, if we include other formats like 8/70 which is finding an increased presence in Europe, by the end of this year the total number of large format screens will reach sixty. Annual attendances in Europe are around 12 million visitors and are increasing steadily which means that European exhibitors now account for around a fifth of the global large format market.
