The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter presentations of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” in North America. These were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.

“E.T.” was among eighteen confirmed first-run films released in 1982 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. Thirty-one 70mm prints of the film were reportedly struck for distribution in North America (plus at least two additional 70mm prints struck during the release). The Universal release — directed by Steven Spielberg (“Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark”) and starring Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote and Henry Thomas — opened June 11th.

Pre-release screenings of “E.T.” included the world premiere as the closing night feature of the 1982 Cannes Film Festival on May 26th and the U.S. premiere held June 10th at the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles.

The 70mm prints of “E.T.” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A” encoded “baby boom” format) and pillarboxed imagery (approximately 1.85:1) blown up from spherical 35mm.

The 70mm prints of “E.T.” screened in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco were reportedly struck directly from the original negative, with the balance of the 70mm prints contact-printed from a 65mm inter-negative.

Universal circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” “The Dark Crystal” and “The Thing” during the initial weeks of the release of “E.T.” For long-running bookings of “E.T.,” additional trailers from Universal became available over the course of the release, including “Doctor Detroit,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “Jaws 3-D,” “The Pirates of Penzance,” “Six Weeks” and “The Sting II.” During the film’s 1985 re-issue, Universal circulated 70mm trailers for “Legend” and “Weird Science.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well. Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “E.T.” varied by venue and screening.

The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) has been included in parenthesis following the applicable cinema name.

Note that some of the presentations included in this listing may have been presented in 35mm during the latter week(s) of engagement due to contractual terms or print damage and the distributor’s unwillingness to supply a 70mm replacement print or because the booking was moved to a non-70mm-equipped auditorium within a multiplex. As well, the reverse may have been true in some cases whereas a booking began with a 35mm print because the lab was unable to complete the 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery or the exhibitor negotiated a mid-run switch to 70mm. In these cases, any 35mm portion of the engagement (or movement out of a branded auditorium) has been included in the duration figure.
