The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “That’s Entertainment!” in North America. These were the
cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“That’s Entertainment!” was among five confirmed first-run films released in
1974 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. Forty-eight 70mm prints of
the film were reportedly struck for worldwide distribution with about half
of them booked in North America. The MGM presentation and United Artists
release — directed by Jack Haley, Jr. and narrated by Fred Astaire, Bing
Crosby, Gene Kelly, Peter Lawford, Liza Minnelli, Donald O’Connor, Debbie
Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, Frank Sinatra, James Stewart, and Elizabeth Taylor
— premiered in Beverly Hills on May 17th.
The 70mm prints of “That’s Entertainment!” featured six-track stereophonic
sound and variable aspect ratio imagery blown up from a combination of
anamorphic and spherical 35mm.
