First, a word of warning. This film is not for the faint hearted or the squeamish. It is not for those who hope and expect cinema to depict the world as it should be, as opposed to reflecting the world as it is. "The Hateful Eight" is ugly, violent, gory and brutal. it also contains some of the most hauntingly beautiful and poetic imagery ever projected in a cinema. If at all possible, it must be seen in Ultra Panavision 70. A huge amount of courage, dedication and vision has gone into bringing this film to the big screen, for a mainstream audience to have it's eyes opened to what cinema is capable of achieving in the hands of a true master. With "The Hateful Eight", Tarantino has proved himself to be a master of painterly composition in the class of Kubrick, a virtuoso of landscape in the league of Lean, He shines supreme in the art of casting and directing ensemble players the like of which has not been seen since Welles and his Mercury Theatre. Ennio Morricone has composed a score of outstanding measure and power that supports and underpins "The Hateful Eight" with great skill and aplomb. A landmark in the history of film composition is the dissonant fugue that is heard at a particularly critical point in the action. There are many references in "The Hateful Eight" to great works of the cinema and beyond. Tribute is paid to Kubrick, "The Shining" and the ever present chess game Kubrick played in between takes. Death and chess are close, as in "The Seventh Seal". In "The Hateful Eight", White hell is other people, a riff on Satre's Huis Clos and Bunuel's "Exterminating Angel". Tarantino is the most painterly director, working in cinema today. He is our Goya, most notably in his unflinching portrayal of violence and horror. To see Goya's painting of Saturn will require a visit to the Prado Museum in Madrid. To see "The Hateful Eight" in 70mm will require a visit to the Odeon Leicester Square in London.
