The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
re-release engagements of “The Exorcist” in the United States and Canada. The
re-release offered moviegoers a unique opportunity to re-experience this popular
motion picture.
“The Exorcist” was among at least two re-issues and nine confirmed first-run
films released in 1979 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The Warner
Bros. release was directed by William Friedkin (“The French Connection,”
“Sorcerer”) and starred Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow and Linda Blair. The film
was originally released in 1973 in 35mm with monaural audio.
The 70mm re-release prints of “The Exorcist” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo
(“A” encoded Baby Boom format) and pillarboxed imagery (approximately 1.85:1)
blown up from spherical 35mm.
Warner Bros. circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for “The
In-Laws” and “The Main Event” during the re-release of “The Exorcist.” Other
studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as well. Ultimately, any
70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “The Exorcist” varied by
venue and screening.
