70mm, movies and stars on the gigantic 32 x 15 meter screen with a beautiful view of the city of Banská Bystrica in the evening light behind it. Picture by Martin Dubovsky

There are screenings dedicated to films shown on film reels. There are even several 70mm film festivals. But there is probably only one event in the world that regularly shows 70mm films under the open sky every year. The screenings take place on a gigantic 32 x 15 meter screen with a beautiful view of the city of Banská Bystrica in the evening light behind it. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the festival.

We will be screening two 70mm films over two evenings. And since it's the tenth anniversary, we've chosen some very challenging titles. On the first evening, we will screen the German film “Mediterranean Holiday,” which was shot on 65mm negative using the MCS 70 system in 1962. It was released in Czechoslovak cinemas exactly 60 years ago. It is the only 70mm film in history to have been dubbed into Slovak. On this occasion, we will screen the film from a new 70mm copy with Slovak DTS 6ch Special Venue sound. With introductory music and an intermission.

The second 70mm print will be the film “The Brutalist," which premiered on September 1, 2024, at the Venice Film Festival, where Brady Corbet won the Silver Lion for Best Director. During the year, it won numerous awards, including three Golden Globes and three Oscars. The film was shot on VistaVision, and we will be surprised to see how it looks under the open sky.

The accompanying program for the evening 70mm presentation is a little more demanding each year than the previous one. After ten years, the Panoramic Film Presentation [ppf] is changing to the city film festival and will be even closer to all film fans, not only from Banská Bystrica.

The festival remains faithful to classic films prints, but in addition to exclusive screenings at the summer cinema in the amphitheatre, this year it will also feature meetings with filmmakers, thematic lectures and a series of screenings in unusual locations.

We hope that the weather will behave, so we will all be able to enjoy the "Splendour of 70mm" under the open night sky. The experience of open-air 70mm is different from the experience in a classic cinema. It is hard to explain. Come and try for yourself.
