Ich nutzte dabei die Gelegenheit das renommierte "Gartenbau-Kino" in Wiens erstem Bezirk "Innere Stadt" zu besuchen. Gezeigt wurde der Film "So finster die Nacht" ("Let the Right One In", Schweden, 2008). Natürlich war ich sofort von dem Einsaalkino begeistert – ein echtes Traditionskino aus alten Zeiten. Im November 2018 veröffentlichte Thomas Hauerslev auf seiner Webseite einen interessanten Bericht über dieses Kino. Das erweckte in mir den Gedanken, mehr über die Geschichte des Theaters in Erfahrung zu bringen. Bei dieser Gelegenheit erhielt ich auch Informationen über Wiens erstes "Gartenbau-Kino", das von 1919 bis 1960 existierte. Das neue "Gartenbau-Kino" wurde am 19. Dezember 1960 mit dem Film "Spartacus" (USA, 1960) in Super Technirama 70 und 6-Kanal Magnetton festlich eingeweiht – unter persönlicher Anwesenheit von Kirk Douglas und seiner Frau. Das war damals in Österreich auch die Premiere für die Aufführung eines Spielfilms im 70mm-Format. Meine Arbeit besteht aus zwei langen Abschnitten: A) das alte "Gartenbau-Kino" und B) das neue "Gartenbau-Kino". Bei dieser Gelegenheit informiere ich hier und da auch über andere Kinos und über interessante Filmpremieren, die in den entsprechenden Zeitperioden stattfanden. Alle diese Informationen konnte ich durch Nachlesen in den entsprechenden Zeitungen und Fachzeitschriften der damaligen Zeit gewinnen. Dabei standen mir die Berliner Staatsbibliothek (Zeitungsarchiv) am "Westhafen" und die Berliner "Filmbibliothek" im Filmhaus am Potsdamer Platz zur Verfügung. Die ergiebigste Quelle war jedoch die Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, die erfreulicherweise im Internet eine sehr große Auswahl an historischem Informationsmaterial zur Verfügung stellt. Ich fand meine Reise in die Wiener Film- und Kinowelt, bis zurück in die Zeit des Stumm- und frühen Tonfilms, sehr interessant. Ich bin erstaunt, was für eine ausgeprägte Kinokultur bereits damals existierte. Beide Berichte sind jetzt als PDF-Dateien verfügbar. Jeder ist um 70 Seiten lang. Das ist für eine einzelne PDF-Datei, mit einer vernünftig lesbaren Auflösung für das Internet, etwas zu lang. Also habe ich jeden Bericht in drei kleinere Dateien unterteilt. On this occasion I used the opportunity to visit the renowned "Gartenbau-Kino" located in Vienna's first district "Innere Stadt" (inner city). They were showing the movie "So finster die Nacht" ("Let the Right One In", Sweden, 2008). I was, of course, immediately impressed by the single screen cinema – a true traditional venue from the old days. In November 2018, Thomas Hauerslev had published an interesting report about this movie theatre on his website. That gave me the idea of learning more about the theatre's history. On this occasion I also got information about Vienna's first "Gartenbau-Kino" that existed from 1919 until 1960. The new "Gartenbau-Kino" was festively inaugurated with the movie "Spartacus" (USA, 1960) on 19th December 1960 in Super Technirama 70 and 6-channel magnetic sound – also with Kirk Douglas and his wife in attendance. This was the first wide-gauge 70mm screening in Austria. My work consists of two very long sections: A) the old "Gartenbau-Kino" and B) the new "Gartenbau-Kino". On this occasion I have added detail here and there about other cinemas and about interesting movie premieres that took place in the corresponding time periods. I obtained all this information by reading the appropriate newspapers and trade magazines of that time available at Berlin´s State Library (newspaper archive) located at "Westhafen" and at Berlin's film library located at Potsdamer Platz in "Filmhaus" (Filmhouse). The most productive source, however, was the Austrian National Library, which fortunately provides a very large selection of historical information material on internet. I found my journey into the Viennese film and cinema world, also covering the time of the silent and early sound era, very interesting. I was amazed by the distinct cinema culture, which existed at the time. Both reports are available as PDF files now – but unfortunately only in German. Each report has around 70 pages. That's, with a reasonably readable resolution for the internet, a bit too long for a single PDF file. So, I have divided each report into three smaller files.
