"Biffen" (in Aalborg, Denmark) celebrates its 25th anniversary in April
2014. One day of the anniversary -Saturday, April 26 - is dedicated to
70mm. In 2009 Biffen moved to its present location at Nordkraft,
Aalborg's former power plant. Manager Orla Nielsen and his staff have
built 3 luxurious high-impact cinemas with curved screens, which gives
the audience the best cinema experience. 70mm have always been shown at
the Biffen - to the enjoyment of the audience, and there is a special
reason for that: "I run 70mm at Biffen for the simple reason I think it is a fabulous format. I like to look at it, it is easy to handle and we can run it. It is a pleasure for me to see a large well-illuminated 70mm image on the screen. And with that large hole in the projector aperture plate, it is easy to punch some light onto the screen. Those are the primary reasons why I run 70mm here. Our CinemaScope picture looks good too, but there is something special about 70mm which is hard to describe. If you see a picture filmed in that format, it is beyond competition, like "Baraka". All those details, the definition and brilliance, it is unbelievable. It is like looking out of a huge window. It is almost three-dimensional." - says Orla. In connection with the anniversary, Orla Nielsen hopes to present at least two films in 70mm. We will start in the morning after breakfast and continue through the day until evening. In other words, a full day with 70mm film, a lecture or two, tours in the projection rooms for those who desire to see it, the odd surprise, and demonstrations of different 70mm formats on our 10 meter (30 feet) deeply curved screen of Cinema A. All films will be shown with our two OSCAR winning and historically correct Philips DP70 Todd-AO 70mm machines. We will also try to organize lunch, and a light dinner. Biffen is the only remaining cinema in Denmark capable of showing 70mm with 6-track stereophonic sound. Spectacular film formats like Todd-AO, Ultra Panavision and MCS 70 Superpanorama, which once graced Danish screens, will make a brief come back for one day only on April 26, 2014. Come to Aalborg and celebrate Biffen's anniversary, and experience the best of all cinema techniques - 70MM FILM. Remember the date: Saturday, April 26, 2014. Full details about films, program, hotel possibilities, tickets and prices is expected to be ready by late January 2014. Aalborg is the 3rd largest city of Denmark and is easily reachable by car, trains and airplanes. This is a rare opportunity to experience REAL 70MM FILM in one of the best Danish cinemas. |
